FACD 2008 Annual Scientific Session & Trade Show

The 2008 FACD Annual Scientific Session & Trade Show marks the 10th Anniversary of our meeting, and our theme is, appropriately enough, The Changing Face of Dentistry.  This can mean so many things, but the key word is ‘change’.

The English dictionary defines the act of change as “to make the future course of something different from what it is or what it would be if left alone.”  In the dental industry we are always facing some form of change.  This year, FACD will give you the tools from a practice and business perspective to take control of change that affects your future course.

Join us as we celebrate our 10th Anniversary of the FACD Annual Scientific Session. This is a year you do not want to miss, so make your plans now to change the future of your practice!

Speakers & Course Descriptions

Our board is working to keep things moving forward by capitalizing on the success that we saw at the 2007 meeting.  The 2008 meeting will be the 10th Anniversary of FACD’s Annual Scientific Session & Trade Show, and will be a meeting that you won’t want to miss.

“Treatment Planning: A Biomechanical Rationale”
by Carl Misch, BS, DDS, MDS, PhD

The most common early loading failure in implant dentistry is in the softest bone types or when implants are shorter than 10mm long. The primary cause of failure is from biomechanical overload. Therefore, a treatment plan should have a biomechanical rationale to reduce the risk of failure. There are key implant positions based upon biomechanics in an implant treatment plan. These key positions follow four initial guidelines: no cantilevers, limit to two pontics, canine and first molar position and arch dynamics. Once the key implant positions are determined, additional implants are used to decrease above average patient force factors or below average bone density, or when key implant positions cannot be inserted.

“Supporting Excellence in Implant Dentistry”
by Joy Millis
Implant dentistry can result in full-mouth dentistry instead of partial, insurance-driven care. Joy Millis will give you the step-by-step process for incorporating more implant dentistry in your practice. Patients are requesting implant dentistry. You might as well provide it. Joy will share the marketing and communication skills that go and-in-hand with the clinical skills necessary for providing this life-changing care.

“Achieving Predictable Aesthetics”
by Matt Roberts
There are many things to consider when approaching a comprehensive case. Success is achieved by taking a series of logical, sequential steps, each of which builds upon the firm foundation laid by the previous, without any gaps, spaces, or leaps of logic. We have many new materials to work with to achieve the goals that our patient’s desire and each material have different strengths, preparation requirements and esthetic outcomes. This lecture will help participants develop a predictable approach to planning and executing optimal treatment starting with good communication between the treating dentist, laboratory technician, and specialists. We will then look at patient needs and discuss various treatment options utilizing the restorative materials available to us today. Treatment sequencing, preparation design appropriate for the selected material, and final esthetic results will be discussed. Hopefully everyone will come out with a broader understanding of how to meet our patient’s expectations in an efficient, predictable manner.

“The Mystery Patient”
by Suzanne Boswell
The decision-making process of today's patients is highly influenced by criteria unrelated to clinical issues. Feelings about accepting treatment begin before the clinical exam or the treatment plan is ever offered. In this seminar, a "professional patient" will introduce you to the societal trends that are presently influencing your patient's decision-making process. You will learn what factors you can control in retaining your patients in challenging times and what it will take to build long term patient loyalty. You'll learn how patients "qualify" the practice and you'll hear actual audios of patient phone calls to practices. Staff will learn the significance of their every interaction with patients, as well as how patients view the team. Emphasis will be placed on increasing patient trust and strengthening patient loyalty.
